PU strengthens agricultural collaboration with Chinese institutions
![]() LAHORE: (Thursday, October 23, 2025): In a significant step toward advancing agricultural innovation and strengthening bilateral cooperation, Punjab University Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics hosted a high-level meeting with a distinguished delegation from leading Chinese institutions. The meeting was chaired by Chairman Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics Prof Dr Muhammad Ashfaq along with Dr Muhammad Ali Kalsra in which Mr. Xu and Mr. Jia from various Chinese research and agricultural organizations were also present. The session focused on strategic collaboration in agricultural science and technology, emphasizing the development of climate-resilient crop varieties and ensuring food security. The participants discussed the transfer and joint development of weather and climate resistant crops to promote sustainable agriculture in Pakistan and China. The meeting also discussed joint scientific research on crop improvement, particularly the enhancement of Honglian-type hybrid rice through advanced breeding technologies. Strengthening China-Pakistan agricultural relations through innovation and shared development goals. The institutes will promote technology exchange under the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) frameworks. The institutions are also finalizing formal cooperation agreements between partner institutions, establishing academic exchange programs for students and faculty to foster mutual learning and capacity building. Dr Muhammad Ashfaq expressed gratitude to the Chinese delegation for their commitment to future collaboration.
